PayPal is a gateway company that allows you to take credit cards, e-checks and of course PayPal payments.

Because so many customers have a PayPal account, it is advised that you offer this option even if you have a gateway for credit card processing. This allows your customer to choose how they want to pay. Some might use their credit card through your gateway, others may choose PayPal. Online businesses that offer their customers lots of choices are usually more successful than those that don't.
