Gateway For Credit Card Processing

There is always a third party involved in the credit card transactions for your business. This gateway account is often referred to as merchant account. If you are serious about doing business online, it is imperative that you have a way to accept credit cards. Credit cards are the payment method of choice for millions of customers around the world. It is estimated that the majority of online shoppers choose credit cards as their method of payment.

A gateway company will set you up with a merchant account. When your customer shops at your site, they pay you by entering their personal and credit card information. The information is processed by the third party company when the customer submits it. The third party company charges you a per transaction fee which averages around two or three percent. You may also be required to pay a monthly service charge. Some companies also charge a setup fee, some do not. Shopping around will get you the best services for the best price. Many merchant account providers have websites where you can research information.

If you are unable to obtain a merchant account, there are other options. Merchant accounts can be difficult to obtain for new businesses or owners with bad credit. If your application is denied, you may want to look into some merchant account providers with more lenient requirements. They may charge higher fees because they are made for smaller or high risk companies. One option that is always affordable is PayPal. PayPal is a gateway company that allows you to take credit cards, e-checks and of course PayPal payments.

Because so many customers have a PayPal account, it is advised that you offer this option even if you have a gateway for credit card processing. This allows your customer to choose how they want to pay. Some might use their credit card through your gateway, others may choose PayPal. Online businesses that offer their customers lots of choices are usually more successful than those that don't. If you want to find out more about PayPal and merchant accounts, there is a large amount of information on the Internet.
